LA1010 — Criminal Law Criminal Law is a Level 4 compulsory module and one of the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for a qualifying law degree. It covers the general principles of criminal liability, including actus reus and mens rea, a range of fatal and non-fatal offences, attempts, secondary liability and defences. Students develop the ability to explain and analyse criminal law and apply its principles to problem question scenarios.
LA1020 — Public Law Public Law is a Level 4 compulsory module introducing students to key constitutional principles and the legal and political issues related to the operation of the British Constitution. Students critically analyse the doctrines and institutions of the constitution, the checks and balances within the institutions of the state, and constitutional change over time.
LA1031 — Legal System and Method (LSM) Legal System and Method is a Level 4 compulsory module that introduces students to the operations of the English legal system. It provides a foundation in legal skills and methodology, including how to read and apply cases and statutes, and how to construct legal arguments. This module is the gateway to all further study on the LLB programme.
LA1040 — Contract Law Contract Law is a Level 4 compulsory module and one of the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for a qualifying law degree. It introduces students to the principles of contract at common law and in equity, covering key topics such as formation of contracts, consideration, privity, breach of contract and remedies for breach of contract.
LA2019 — Family Law Family Law is a Level 5 module covering key legal rules and principles of family law. Topics include nullity of marriage, divorce, financial remedies on divorce, protection from domestic violence and a comparison of legal remedies available to married couples and cohabiting couples. Students develop critical perspectives on contemporary issues and proposed law reforms.
LA2001 — Tort Law Tort Law is a Level 5 compulsory module and one of the seven foundations of legal knowledge. It introduces students to the organising principles of tort law, including damage, fault and vicarious liability. Students explore the cause of action in a negligence claim with particular emphasis on the duty of care concept and the principles of liability governing other torts.
LA3002 — Equity and Trusts Equity and Trusts is a Level 6 module and one of the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for a qualifying law degree. It examines the principles of equity and the law of trusts, including the creation and enforcement of express, resulting and constructive trusts, fiduciary duties and equitable remedies.
LA2003 — Property Law Property Law is a Level 5 module and one of the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for a qualifying law degree. It covers the principles of land law including estates and interests in land, registration, co-ownership, leases, easements and mortgages. Students develop an understanding of how property law operates in practice.
LA3005 — Jurisprudence and Legal Theory Jurisprudence and Legal Theory is a Level 6 compulsory module providing an introduction to legal theory. It covers basic theoretical and ethical perspectives on the law, examining the contributions of leading jurists from the Ancient Greeks to contemporary thinkers. Students gain an understanding of how jurisprudence has contributed to the development of modern political, economic and legal systems.
LA3007 — Evidence Evidence is a Level 6 module introducing students to the rules and principles that govern how evidence is presented, admitted and used in legal proceedings. Topics include the admissibility of evidence, burden and standard of proof, hearsay, character evidence, and the principles governing witness testimony in both civil and criminal proceedings.
LA2010 — EU Law EU Law is a Level 5 module and one of the seven foundations of legal knowledge required for a qualifying law degree. It examines the constitutional and institutional framework of the European Union, the sources of EU law, the relationship between EU law and national law, and the key principles of free movement and EU competition law.
LA3008 — Civil and Criminal Procedure This module covers the procedural rules and practice governing both civil and criminal proceedings. In civil procedure, students examine the Civil Procedure Rules, case management and the conduct of litigation. In criminal procedure, students study the criminal justice process from investigation through to trial, sentencing and appeal. Students develop practical knowledge of how the courts operate in both jurisdictions.
